JOIN THE ALLIANCE
If Rafael Guastavino, father or son, created some part of your site you are eligible to become a Charter Member of the Guastavino Alliance. The Alliance was recently formed by a group in Asheville, North Carolina, the location of the first two major sites to join the Alliance: Biltmore Estate and the Basilica of St. Lawrence. Also here is the site of the Guastavino family home and tile production kilns as well as the senior Guastavino’s grave. The mission of the Guastavino Alliance is to champion the history and preservation of the Guastavinos’ over 1,000 works of vaulting and domes, which feature their unique structural tile method.
There are more than 600 extant Guastavino sites in 35 states and six countries. Our goal is to connect these sites in an alliance so that we may all work together in preservation, research, education, and advocacy of the Guastavinos' large body of work. We are anxious to share our experience and expertise with other sites and facilitate mutual sharing in many areas, including interpretive materials, publicity, social media, fundraising strategies, exhibits, grant opportunities, special events, conferences, lectures, etc.
A seminal event that led to the creation of the Guastavino Alliance was the donation by Dr. John Ochsendorf of the digital files for Palaces for the People, an exhibit organized in 2012 as part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Guastavino Project. All members of the Alliance are eligible to use these files for their own exhibits. Locally, we mounted an exhibit at the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center in Black Mountain, NC. We are also designing a permanent outdoor exhibit in downtown Asheville.
Other benefits of membership in the Alliance include a periodic newsletter and the ability to purchase at reduced cost copies of Ochsendorf’s Guastavino Vaulting: The Art of Structural Tile. At this time we are not charging fees to join the Alliance, but welcome any donations to our 501c3 non-profit organization, which can be made online below.
I hope that your site will become a member of the Guastavino Alliance. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
David Madden, Chair
